Mealworm Shortage

So Jack is back to crickets. That's right, crickets. She doesn't seem to mind and chases them wholeheartedly. What I want to know is what the hell is the *cause* of the mealworm shortage? Since Jack joined our family I've never walked into a pet store and not find meal worms. So far the only things I have found regarding this is 1) due to demand and 2) someone mentioned an issue with feed and scores of mealworms dying. I can't find anything to back that up though and it was only one post. Hopefully someone will tell us what really is happening out there. I guess there is an issue with fruitflies, too?

A mealworm shortage? Now that's a new one. I know there have been rice shortages, curry shortages and something else I've already forgotten (besides gas, which I haven't forgotten).

We have horses and are suffering shortages of all kinds because of all the corn being turned into ethanol. Maybe the mealworms have all starved to death with no corn.

There's a hay shortage because the hay fields have been converted to corn fields for ethanol. The price of feed has gone way up because the corn that is part of it is being used for ethanol. Pretty soon we'll have to feed the horses ethanol.

There have been some problems with toxins in horse feed, too (Purina most recently). I wouldn't think that mealworms were that delicate, but who knows. Maybe they got a bad batch of mealworm food.

I do hope you'll get more useful and helpful posts and answers than this one.

Yep! Next time you're at the pet store ask for meal worms. Some places won't get shipments for up to 6 weeks!
