On my Google page I have the Slate.com widget that tells me the latest articles going on, but since I don’t visit my Google page every single day (I know, how awful, right?) I don’t always read the many things I link to every day. Which is good because not everything gets updated every single day. There are some widgets that will have the same 5 or 9 (depending on what I have to set for) article links for weeks. I don’t know, perhaps the widget is broken?
Anyway, I read Dear Prudence and watch the cute little cartoon vidoes, too. What can I say? Some people out there are simply messed up! Reading the column actually makes me feel better, or at the very least, normal. (I’m FAR from normal, truly, but these people make me THINK I’m normal for all of 5 minutes.)
I’ve also been through all but one of my daily reads (the link isn’t loading, not sure if it’s them or me) and I’m listening to Slacker again. I’m going to have to stop listening at some point because, even though it isn’t a bandwidth hog, there are 5 of us using the same connection and we seriously don’t want to go over the stupid Cap that Comcast put on everyone. Bastards.
I also saw a link to the lovely view of our universe via APOD: Mauna Kea Milky Way Panorama. This is beautiful. I’d love to see this in person.
There are several other things that I have on my Google page, such as, a page dedicated to About.com. I have Web Design, Anime and even the Computing Center on there. You never know what kind of tidbits you can pick up from reading such articles. Yet on my main page I have things like FoxNews, two different weather widgets (while we have a specific mailing address our temp usually coincides with the other, so I get both - currently there’s a 4 degree difference between the two), the requisite Clock and Calendar and even How To of the Day - expanded to show 9 links. I’ve read a few How-To articles thanks to this widget, things I wouldn’t have thought to look up.
Now you don’t have to have a Google page. It’s just my preferred method. There are also other places like Yahoo and MSN. I just use Google because my main email addresses are with them. It’s so much easier to have everything in one place. I also use their Document feature to keep important things (such as my mom’s obituary) that I don’t want to lose yet I don’t want to have sitting somewhere in the house either.
My Google page also let’s me read some pretty interesting quotes - sometimes funny, sometimes serious - and every now and then I find one that I agree with. I even have the Sci-Fi Wire widget which allowed me to find out about Stargate Atlantis ending after the previous season. I immediately informed Honey who started doing a little more research. Supposedly Stargate Universe is supposed to come out but we haven’t heard anything regarding that at all anymore. Perhaps Stargate is dead, it did have a good life. I would have liked to know who really won with Atlantis, though.
WIth my far-ranging tastes from reading about Sci-Fi shows to Science Daily articles Googe helps me keep everything in one place. What do you use to keep yourself updated on the current happenings in the world today?
